I Can Cook

One of the nice things about going home is the chance to learn how to cook meals I had always loved when I was a kid but never had a chance to make on my own. During my recent trip home, I asked my mom to include me in the making of lasagna. If anyone knows how to cook or has ever cooked lasagna knows that this is no difficult task and could easily be considered a basic level of baking.

Regardless of the level of difficulty, I was happy to learn and excited to cook with my mom. Since my grandma had died, we had simplified holiday cooking and meals. Meals for the family could be done by one person and having more than one cook was almost a hazard unless each had their own tasks that didn’t overlap.

My mom kind of laughed when I asked for her to teach me because there really wasn’t much to learn. I was thrilled, though. We were making a simple lasagna that meant we weren’t cooking and adding meat. The longest part of the prep process was getting the noodles ready. After the noodles were cooked the layering process began.

I’ve eaten countless lasagnas before but I never actually knew the specific layers other than cheese, noodles, and sauce. We quickly put everything together. It took a little longer than expected only because I took so many photos to recount the event later. I’m sure my mom was trying not to roll her eyes as I stopped at every layer.

Once everything was put together, we put the lasagna in the oven and started on the sides. After everything was hot and ready, we made our plates and enjoyed the meal. Everything was cooked perfectly although I may have put a little too much sauce.

After a tasty dinner, I was really proud and happy I was able to recreate a childhood favorite.

Random Winning

Last week I was incredibly happy because I found out that I won a VIP experience for the X Ambassadors concert from Z104 radio station in Madison. It was really last minute so I wasn’t able to find anyone to go with me to the Meet and Greet with the band but my roommate was able to go to the concert with me.

It was really crazy honestly because one day I was just having a normal week and then all of a sudden I was taking off work and heading to a concert. The Meet and Greet was really quick but they did perform a sound check too. It was awesome because we were able to hear their most popular song with no screaming fans and still get the full theater experience. The set was tasteful and the guys were so nice. I couldn’t have asked for a better concert to win VIP tickets for.

I had a little bit of time between the Meet and Greet and the show so I walked around the state capital building and then sat in a coffee shop until the show started. Forgot how beautiful the Capitol building really is well though I was sad that my friend who works there was already gone for the day. I had to wait quite a while before Delaney got there because she was in class right before the show. It was fine though because I wasn’t really picky about where I stood since the concert was free.

It took a while before the concert got going. There were two performers before them but when the X Ambassadors finally came out it was worth the wait! They put on a spectacular show and I was so happy I was able to attend. The lighting was great and it was easy to tell the guys were having a blast. The main singers dance moves were pretty funny but I think my favorite part was the vocals. He has a huge range and I was impressed with how high he could actually sing. It was a top night.

Since Delaney drove to meet me, I even got a ride home and went to bed with a smile on my face. I have no doubt that this was the best Tuesday I had in a long time!

Making Strides

I had a rough couple of weeks. I’m not going to lie. Life has been a struggle. Despite all the hardship, I decided that it’s time to do something for me. With a reminder from my friend Christy, I signed up to run the Bellin Run.

The Bellin Run is a 10K race that takes place the second week in June every year. I used to run it every year in Elementary School/Middle School. Since it has been quite a bit since I’ve been in either I’m extremely excited for an epic flashback! I’ve been quite bummed out for a while now and this has race has me hopeful again.

At the end of last year, I ran 7 miles so I know I can kick this 10K’s butt! The Bellin Run is only 6.2 miles so I know I am going to be successful! My time may not be anything to brag about but I have a long way to come before I will be ready. I’m ready to get back in my healthy habits and change my life.

The nice thing about the Bellin Run is that they have a training schedule online. I was lucky that I signed up now because the training schedule starts on Easter Sunday aka this Sunday. The training schedule doesn’t look so bad and now that daylight savings time has passed, there are more hours of the sunlight and more time to run outside. I’m grateful that my friend Christy also signed up because I will have a running buddy. Unfortunately, she doesn’t live in Madison, so I won’t have a running buddy for the training. I will have a friend on race day though so that is fantastic.

I’m definitely a little bit nervous about the race because I’ve been having a few problems with my asthma. The reason I stopping running last year was because I couldn’t breathe. I’m not too worried though because I have doctors that can help me and I’m really motivated. This is going to be the best 10K ever! Bring on June 11!

Food Crafts

One of the latest food trends is the rainbow bagel. They look magical and I’m sure they taste delicious. When I was shopping for groceries this week I decided that I was going to make my own rainbow bagels. I found a recipe online that was really easy. The recipe was more like rainbow biscuits but I thought I could handle it.

I started out by splitting up the biscuits into four equal parts. Once they were fully mixed I added colors to each one. I couldn’t quite get the food coloring to cover all of the dough so it was more like marble. I then rolled out the dough and stacked all the colors up. I cut what seemed to be small pieces and formed my own bagels. They got a little bit bigger than I expected so I should have probably made them half the size.

The rainbow bagels were less rainbow bagel and more biscuits with personality but I was still proud of them.

Once they were cooled down, I got out my cream cheese and tried one. My suspicions were confirmed and the bagel was way to big. Even though I hadn’t eaten dinner, I just could not finish the bagel. The cream cheese was also a little too sweet so that might have made and impact too.

I had a long day at work and this simple baking experiment was just what I needed to relax and clear my mind. Not to mention, I also had a pretty yummy dinner! Let me know what you think of my bagel/biscuit experience and any advice you have for my next attempt.

Missing Summer

As the temperatures went below freezing again this week, I can honestly say I am missing summer. I know summer is quite a ways away and honestly spring weather would be great right about now.  But since I am in a summer and sunshine mood, I thought I would share all things I love about summer.

Last summer, I was spoiled and I spent the first part of summer in Madrid followed by the glorious sunshine of Valladolid, Spain to end my European travels. While that was a special year, summer always holds a fond place in my heart with memories of family visits and warm water.  While summer always meant the much needed break from school it also included some little treasures.

1.  Watermelon

Nothing says summer more than eating fresh cut watermelon out in the sunshine.  I have to admit it can be somewhat of a sticky situation (pun intended) but that fresh, sweet watermelon always makes me smile.  Watermelon is also in season during the summer so there is rarely a time that the watermelon doesn’t taste fabulous.

2.  Swimming

I’m not always a fan of going swimming but I do think it is the best form of exercise.  If I had access to a pool, I would probably swim everyday but usually I only get a chance to swim in summer. I always associate swimming to summer. All the way up to middle school, I would spend the summer camping and go from swimming in the pool to swimming in the lake.

 3.  Exploring

There is always something new and thrilling happening going on in summer. From summer festivals to music events, I love it all. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family and usually summer is the only time everyone is available. We may not all be available at the same time but usually I am able to everyone I care about during that time. One of my favorite explorations was when my friends and I ran all over Sydney for school.

I hope now you understand a little bit better why I love summer.  It may get a little two hot but it is second on my list of favorite seasons for a reason.  I know there is a long way to go before the summer shades and short sleeves come out but I will be ready.

An Epic TBT

Last year, I was on one of the greatest journey’s of my life. I was finishing my Bachelor of Arts degree, studying abroad and doing and internship in London, England.

One of the greatest things I attended while I was in London was the Brit Awards. One year ago on February 25, 2015 I stepped out of my comfort zone and attended my first awards show alone. I mean, how could I miss that right?

I have to admit, I never watched the BRIT Awards before so I didn’t know what to expect exactly but I made up for it by watching almost every other awards show. Needless to say, I had a good understanding of how the night would go. Taylor Swift opened the show and had a spectacular performance. I was thrilled to also see Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith perform. The highlight of the night for me was the performance by George Ezra!  I knew his voice was different, but in that huge arena, it was absolutely incredible.  Listening back on the video I recorded, I am still sad to say it doesn’t do his amazing vocal talent justice.

I was sitting quite high up so I couldn’t quite see everything clear as day but the seats were worth every penny. Celebrity highlights also included Orlando Bloom (eek!), Lionel Riche and Russell Crowe! The night ended with a literal bang as Madonna flew off her platform and hit her head.

I can’t complain with a view like this!

It was a crazy, unbelievable night that was followed by more life changing events. I am so thrilled that I kept a blog of my travels and I love to go back and read of my adventures. The BRITs were amazing and I can’t believe it has been a whole year since I was in the O2!

My Top Tweets

Twitter has an analytics section online so users can see how well their tweets are performing. I checked out mine recently to see what mark I was making on those around me.  While most of my tweets have made little impact in the Twittersphere, I found it interesting to see what impact I have made on those around me without doing much.

Even though February is still going strong, I made the most impact when I joined a live PRSA Webinar called Creative PR. I was ecstatic that I was finally able to join PRSA and gain access to all the resources available to me with the membership. I finally found time to look through the webinars and signed up for my first one.  I was so thrilled about joining in live so I tweeted about my attendance. Two of the speakers retweeted the post so that was one of the reasons this was my highest performing tweet for February.

I had quite a bit going on in January but my biggest achievement was relocating from Texas back to Wisconsin and starting my first full-time job at C. Blohm & Associates! I was so proud to be starting my journey as a Public Relations Professional that I had to share the fantastic news.

When I was still living in Dallas, I had so many incredible opportunities to attend different events. One of my favorites in December was the Reliant Lights your Holiday event. Overall the event wasn’t all that great but I did get to see a medley of my favorite songs from my all time favorite musical! It was such a treat too because the performers were the Broadway cast in town promoting the show. The video had an extra impact because I posted it on Snapchat and it was selected for the Dallas snap story.  Over 25,000 people watched the video!

Twitter isn’t just a platform to share information about me. I also post about current new, events, public relations updates and more. I was pleased to see that this post in November was one of the more impactful just because I thought it was extremely critical event. While most people were upset about a Starbucks cup, I was more concerned about the Bloomingdale’s Date Rape Ad that was getting little attention. I thought the ad was appalling but the lack of concern was just disguising. But anyways, I was glad to see that I helped raise some awareness for the issue.

My favorite tweet from October was also the most effective. I was so blessed to have gone to Texas and to intern at Golin last fall. This tweet contained content that the Golin Dallas twitter account posted. The post was about the new interns so I wanted to share that with everyone.

The Twitter analytics only go back five months so this is all I can share with you today. I thought these tweets gave a good review of my life and topics important in my life. If you have never looked at your highest performing tweets, take a moment to go back and look. Looking back on my tweets was a nice trip down memory lane.

My impact is quite low but there are many who make an impression on so many people. What are your top tweets? What impact have you made?

30 Before 30

The world is huge. So far I have been blessed to have traveled all the places I have and to met the people I did. I am so young still and I want to make sure that I take advantage of the time. While society screams at me to be skinny, to make as much money as possible and to sexualize myself, I want to focus on ME.

So I thought about me. I thought about who I want to become. I thought about what makes me smile. I thought about what makes me tick. I know I’m not perfect and I can talk myself out of anything. So I sat down and made a list. I always finish my to-do lists and I intend to make this a priority. I made a list of what I wanted, thinks that would challenge me and things that seem impossible.

After what seemed like an eternity, I finished. I had my list of 30 things I want to do before I’m 30. It seems daunting now but I’m up for a challenge.

Now, I have seven years so here goes!

Have you met Maya?

Last year, my mom finally decided to get a dog. After looking up places and checking out dogs my mom finally caved to the will of my sister and got a dog. It was important that the breed was hypoallergenic so she had to get a special breed. She ended up choosing a tiny little black Lhasa Poo she called Maya. I only met Maya once before heading to London, so I missed the early months of going outside every hour so Maya could go to the bathroom and cleaning up her messes.

When I did get home, Maya was a little confused at first when she saw me. She just kept looking back and forth at me and Elizabeth. I guess even dogs need a little time before they figure out which twin is which. She was still quite happy to meet me. Maya thinks every new person she meets is there to play with her so she loved that I was there. After being home for about a week, I found out that Maya is a brat. I’m sure all puppies are at one point but something about her just irked me. I guess I always imagined that when my mom got a dog it would be cuddly and just want to nap.

I’m not going to lie, I was a little happy to leave for Texas last fall. Maya controls the house and she has some dominance issues. It was nice to escape the Maya centered world. When I returned though I was really surprised that Maya remembered me. She was so excited and even started whining because I wasn’t giving her enough attention while I unpacked. Having a dog is a huge responsibility so I give my mom a lot of credit for taking on such a big commitment right after retirement.

Maya is now a year old.
Despite her quirks, I am happy that my mom got the dog. Maya really brightened up Elizabeth’s life and I am grateful for that. Hopefully as the years pass her barking won’t be as annoying and she will start to mellow. Dogs are a wonderful, crazy and messy addition to the family but they are a valued member. I hope you enjoyed meeting our newest member.

20 Life Lessons I learned from Harry Potter

Harry Potter has been a huge part of my life and it is the reason there is magic in my life. Looking back on the series, there is more to the books than just a fictional story. I grew up with Harry Potter and his story is part of mine. I would have been shocked if I learned nothing from the story.

The stories took me on an adventure and showed me what friendship was meant to be, how to grow up with grace (not always perfectly), and how a story could change a life. While rereading the series, I found there were 20 life lessons that are applicable in my own life. Here is what I learned:

1. The family you are born into isn’t always better than the family you choose.

Harry lost is parents at a young age and spent his childhood living with his aunt and uncle who were horrible to him. Upon arrival to Hogwarts, Harry met some incredible people that became his family throughout the years. Just because your friends aren’t your blood relatives doesn’t mean they can’t mean you can’t love them just as much.

2. Even bad guys aren’t usually all bad.

When you look at some of the “bad guys” in Harry Potter, it is clear that not all of them are truly bad. Consider Draco Malfoy. From the beginning, he seems to be the worst person ever and always at odds with Harry. By the end of the series we realize he is collateral damage for his parents’ poor alliances. Don’t categorize people by what they seem to be.

3. Don’t waste your life being scared of what’s next.

“To the well-organized mind, death is merely the next great adventure.” –Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

4. “Never trust anything that thinks for itself if you can’t see where it keeps its brain.” –Arthur Weasley, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

This is totally applicable now that people can hide behind social media accounts to hide the truth, just like a young Voldemort did to Ginny and Harry. Trusting someone you don’t know can be dangerous.

5. “Numbing the pain for a while will make it worse when you finally feel it.” –Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

6. The past can’t ever be changed but the future is in our  control.

While Harry and Hermione were able to change Buckbeak’s fate with the time turner, things aren’t always that simple. The past shapes who we become and without the pain, happiness and everything in between we wouldn’t be us. Anything is possible no matter how difficult the task. We have the power to control what will happen to us.

7. Sometimes we have to face our fears in order to get what we want.

Ron followed spiders so he could help his friend in need. Harry overcame his fears so he could produce a patronus. Our wants may not be as severe as Harry and Ron’s but it takes a lot to overcome your fears to get the desired end result.

8. Sometimes we have to fight our battles alone.

Harry had an incredible amount of help from his friends but in some cases he had to fight alone. In the end, it was only him and Voldemort. I can tell you right now my battles are not that intense, but sometimes it takes a great deal of courage to realize that no one can help me but myself.

9. People aren’t always exactly how they seem.

Two words: Sirius Black. We started out hating him because he was the reason Harry’s parents were dead, but he turned into the caring godfather we love.

10. Power must be used cautiously.

Power went to Voldemort’s head and things didn’t work out so well. It feels great to have power and to be in control, but it can destroy you.

11. Wisdom comes as you age.

I have meet some incredible people and just like the characters in Harry Potter, I have so much to learn. Every time Harry was in a tough situation, he could rely on Dumbledore for advice and help. Dumbledore was cryptic and distant sometimes but in the end he offered wise advice and suggestions.

12. Love is more powerful than hatred.

In the end, love, friendship and courage prevailed. Voldemort may have had a lot of power but he didn’t have any friends or any genuine relationships. The support system Harry had gave him the strength to defeat the evil in his life.

13. Teachers are the backbone of everything!

Hogwarts professors taught and protected their students. Real-life teachers may not do magic but they always have their their students’ best interests in mind.

14. Pronunciation is SO important.

Pronunciation is essential when practicing magic and in every day life. End of Story.

15. True friends are there when things get difficult.

This is a common theme in Harry Potter and something I take through life. Friends should be there for you at your best and worst. Period.

16. Sometimes difficult decisions are required to protect the ones we love.

Hermione chose to make her parents forget her instead of risking their lives. No every situation is extreme like Hermione’s but that doesn’t make it any less difficult.

17. Your illness does not define you.

Lupin didn’t let his illness consume his life. Whether you are born with a condition or had one develop later, remember that you are so much more.

18. Don’t be a racist.

Making people feel less of themselves for something that can’t be changed is NOT cool. No matter the comment, it has no place in the Wizarding World or ours.

19. Death isn’t as scary as it seems.

Death is a commonplace in the series. Death will never be easy but the series taught me how to respond. Don’t fear or worry about someone after they are lost; celebrate their lives and move forward.

20. Magic is forever.

This series is case in point for my life. Starting with the books and ending with the movies, I have loved every second and I can’t wait to share the magic with everyone around me.

I have grown a lot from my experiences but Harry Potter has done an incredible amount to shape who I have become. Everyone experiences things differently though, so let me know what you think and share what you learned from Harry Potter.
